Pirates' Dumatrait out of rotation mix
Latest shoulder setback prompts GM to shift him to pen

Phil Dumatrait is out of the Pirates' starting rotation mix after another setback with his left shoulder.

Dumatrait was shut down for 10 days after a visit to Dr. James Andrews, the noted orthopedist, Wednesday in Birmingham, Ala., because of lingering inflammation from the Aug. 8 arthroscopic surgery that was performed to address stress in the rotator cuff.

Pirates general manager Neal Huntington yesterday called the inflammation "routine" for those who have had similar procedures, but the 10-day delay -- the most recent of a series this offseason -- prompted him to change Dumatrait's status from competing for a job in the rotation this spring to competing for bullpen duty.

"We have every reason to believe Phil can recover, if not for right at the start of spring training, then pretty soon after that," Huntington said. "But we didn't feel that would give Phil enough of a chance to get the innings he'd need to start."

The Pirates now have eight pitchers in the rotation mix: Paul Maholm, Ian Snell, Zach Duke, Ross Ohlendorf, Tom Gorzelanny, Jeff Karstens, Jimmy Barthmaier and Daniel McCutchen.
