Roads around the area turned slick late this morning and into the afternoon as freezing rain caused "black ice" conditions and caused several accidents.
One of the worst was reported on the northbound ramp leading from the Veterans Bridge (Interstate 579) to Route 28. Numerous vehicles were involved and the ramp was closed for more than an hour until the wreckage could be cleared and the surface salted.
Shortly after 1 p.m., West Ingomar Road in McCandless was closed in both directions between Route 19 and Camelot Drive when a vehicle crashed into a pole. Entrapment was reported.
Another crash closed Murray Hill Avenue in Squirrel Hill.
And a mid-afternoon crash has closed I-80 westbound between the Clearfield exit (No. 120) and Penfield (No. 111). The road is expected to reopen by 7 p.m.
Some school closings and early dismissals are being reported, including in West Mifflin, which is closing an hour early and canceling evening activities. See information about the closings and delays on KDKA.com, the Post-Gazette's news partner.
