You don't need me advising you to start Drew Brees and Andre Johnson, or to steer clear of Bruce Gradkowski and Lousaka Polite. So I'll spare you the obvious recommendations, focusing instead on the players typically on the bubble of most fantasy rosters. Here are my picks to roll, and get rolled, in Week 17.
Matt Ryan, QB, Falcons vs. Rams. Atlanta can move from the fifth seed to the second with a win and a Carolina loss. Fortunately, Ryan faces a soft Rams secondary in the friendly confines of the Georgia Dome. He should have little trouble moving the ball, and finding the end zone, in this important matchup.
Tashard Choice, RB, Cowboys at Eagles. After posting stellar numbers against the Steelers, Giants and Ravens, the playmaking rookie should have little trouble penetrating Philly's sixth-ranked run defense. Marion Barber, who totaled 114 yards and two TDs against the Eagles in their first matchup, is still limited by a bum toe and is unlikely to contribute much, so look for Choice to dazzle again in this early playoff showdown.
Cedric Benson, RB, Bengals vs. Chiefs. The Chicago castoff has been putting up some excellent statistics over the last two weeks, but he hasn't crossed the goal line since Week 9. Against one of the NFL's worst run defenses, he should defy that trend and emerge as one of the top fantasy backs of the weekend.
Eddie Royal, WR, Broncos at Chargers. Jay Cutler passed for 350 yards last week against Buffalo, but kept all the scoring to himself (running for two TDs). With Tatum Bell his only healthy tailback, and a postseason berth on the line, Cutler will be leaned upon again, but not likely as a rusher. Both Royal and Brandon Marshall must come up big for Denver to have a chance.
Lance Moore, WR, Saints vs. Panthers. He has cooled off in December after reeling in six TDs over five games from Weeks 8 through 13. Moore's drop-off coincides with Marques Colston's reemergence in the offensive attack. But with Drew Brees gunning for Dan Marino's passing yardage record, both starting receivers should flourish.
Peyton Manning, Kurt Warner, Ben Roethlisberger, QBs. They are Exhibits A, B and C for why fantasy championships should never be waged in Week 17. These star passers won't play much, if at all, since their teams have nothing to gain and everything to lose by trotting them out. The Giants could rest their players, too; but after witnessing the benefits of finishing strong against the Patriots in 2007, they probably won't.
Joseph Addai, Brandon Jacobs, Chris Johnson, LenDale White, Willie Parker, RBs. If these players don't score early, you'll be sorry you started them. They are unlikely to play more than a quarter or two, if that much, in their season finales. For the record, Dominic Rhodes has already been declared out.
Reggie Wayne, Marvin Harrison, Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin, Justin Gage, Santonio Holmes, Hines Ward, WRs. Get the picture?
Dallas Clark, Heath Miller, TEs. Just in case you were wondering.
Maurice Morris, RB, Seahawks at Cardinals -- His team is coming off an inspiring victory against the Jets, and faces a playoff-bound Arizona squad that has been coasting for weeks. Morris posted 116 yards on 29 carries last week, while Julius Jones didn't see the field. Look for another solid game by the dual-threat tailback, punctuated by a trip to the end zone.
... neglects to adjust the schedule in your 2009 fantasy league, so you won't have to contest your championship in Week 17 ever again. Do you really want to rely on Jim Sorgi and Cedric Benson next season?
